I bought a pair of NOS stainless door edge guards a while back for the 53-54 chevy, started tapping one on the clips as per the instructions, but noticed that they are just too tight and started chipping the paint on a couple of spots on the door edge. I didn't want to force it on with a rubber mallet as per the instructions risking more chip damage, so stopped. Incidentally, the clips need to be held onto the edge of the door with masking tape, as they don't just "clip on" and stay there as per the instructions. I think the problem is that when my car was re-painted the paint is thicker (more coats plus clear coats in total ) than it probably was from the factory.
Has anyone out there also had this problem ? Perhaps they are the same for the earlier cars. It's a shame as I do think they are a nice looking accessory.

Had exactly the same problem on my 1951 Chevrolet back in the late 1960's. The car had been repainted several times and the paint was too thick to get the door edge guards on without chipping the paint.

wink :)

Thanks Junkyard dog, I should have thought about that before I bought them. Will re-sell these to someone who will hopefully be able to use them on their car.
