Hi Everyone,

Was talking with my Dad last night about setting the valves on his '40. He was telling me that the mechanics at the local Chev garage had a tool that combined both a screwdriver and wrench into one tool. He said that the mechanic would use one hand to do the adjusting and the other hand to run the feeler gauge. When I did the valves on my '50 it was kind of a back and forth deal for me. I used a box wrench and screwdriver to adjust and then would go to other side and check clearance with the feeler gauge. I got it done, but Dad said the guys years ago could set the valves on a 6 cylinder in 10-15 minutes.

Thanks
Don

Keep your eyes open at Flea Markets, Swap Meets and even Auctions. I have seen them around at all three. I have one in my tool box. They are a great tool.

I found one in an antique store in Cave Springs, Arkansas for $2.00. The one I have has two box ends one is a 5/8" and the other is a 9/16" The top screwdriver part will move around and can be used on either box end. NEAT!

If you find one act like it is just a curious piece of junk and offer $2.00 for it. devil

Under Automotive Specialty Tools, select Specialty Tools, item 825 to 830.
http://zimmfgco.com/ out of Chicago, IL.
If ya find out how to order from them, please post it, my email is all screwed up since I loaded IE7 and I can’t send anything out. They're probably just like Martin Forge, who will only sell through a distributor but I've been trying to buy one of their body hammers for a year and can't seem to find a dealer that is willing or able to order it for me!

auto I remember these but haven't seen one in years. They are probably more scarce than drain plug wrenches. I finally found one of those several years ago and got it cheap because the guy selling it thought it was some kind of plumbing tool no longer used. I have been looking for another on but haven't seen one at either Hershey, Carlysle, or Daytona! I'll keep looking and I will add this tool to my search. I have all my deceased father-in-laws other valve-related tools but he did not have one of these adjusting tools! Beamer

Did you look at the link I posted guys? Those tools are still made and sold by Zim Mfg in Chicago, that's why I posted the link. Just skip the anoying intro.
JYD, are you saying that Snap-On is a distributor for Zim??

Here is a little visual comparison of this style in the interest of completing this picture. Must have been a lot of copyright suits or else there was one manufacturer that produced or is producing it under a bunch of other names.

Here is a little note from an antique tool forum that place this style tool back into the 30’s.
This picture shows a New Britain valve adjusting tool, consisting of a stamped-steel wrench with a retractable screwdriver bit mounted on a swinging arm. The tool is stamped "Made in U.S.A." and "Pat. Pend" on the swinging arm.
The overall length is 8.0 inches, and the finish is cadmium plating.
The patent corresponding to the pending status is not yet known.
This valve tool is virtually identical to the Zim Valve Tool shown in the other another picture in this view.
This type of valve tool was offered in the 1937 Western Auto Supply catalog, but without any manufacturer identification.
