Will a 55 chevy 12 volt starter(six cylinder) bolt up to a 54 235 six cylinder? Converting over to 12 volts, six volt starter spins but want engage now.
What about 56-57 six cylinder starters, which might be more plentiful than 55?

If you've converted to 12 volts, why not continue to use the 6 volt starter? It'll crank your 6 in fine fashion, use a 12 volt solenoid and all works well.

Thanks Bob. I'm helping a friend with this project and we will try the 12 volt solinoid. He says the starter worked when he first converted to 12 volts, but now it want engage right.

This is what usually happens. When using a 6-volt starter in a 12-volt system it is very important that to start the car you use a very short attempt to start. Allow the starter to run down and try again with another short application. It is very easy to damage the Bendix and they are not cheap.

The 12 V starter will not match up with the flywheel used in 6V engines. If you install a 12V starter the later flywheel must also be installed.

When I purchased my 54 it had been converted to 12V and was using the 6V starter and solenoid.. Both gave up the job shortly and I had a local starter shop rebuild the starter for 12V High Torque and added the 12volt solenoid.. Cost about $125.00- and works perfectly..
