Pulled the pan on my 1928 engine and the main bearings and crank journals are rough, even though the engine ran albeit some what nosy. The main and rod journals need to be either polished or ground under size. my questions are; do I polish to a suitable finish, minimal material removal, or grind the rods and mains to a standard under size? Are under size main bearings available or is there enough shim stock on the new bearings to accept the reduced journal diameters? Where can I buy replacement main bearings?

Did the rods and mains have any shims left? Try that solution first.

The mains Plastigage at .003 without shims. The rods have two shims per side that are .060 each,.120 per side. The shims look solid and I have tryed to seperate using and x-acto knive with negitive results. The mains look pitted and have wear marks that corispond to marks on the journals. The rod bearings look good but shim adjustment is questionable.

I think you are looking at spacers rather than .06 shims. Sounds like all the shims have been removed already.

Are main bearings available? In standard our under sizes?

If your bearings are pitted, either they are getting brittle or acid has attacked them. In both cases I would suggest getting your shells rebabbited and then line bore them to proper size with 4 0.002" shims per side. There are a few places that do quality work and some I don't trust. Who you select depends upon where you live.

If in doubt about a shop talk to the local Model T or Model A guys. Their engines also have babbit bearings.

I have found a local shop to do the work, but cost is high. Thanks for your inputs, JWP.

$635.00 to "lay" a crank, kinda takes your breath away.

Thanks for the info. You have just convinced me that I am in the wrong occupation.
