Could someone comment on my concern about what type of oil to use in my old cars?? I have a 31-33-54 and have been using 10W-30W with no problems as yet. My understanding is that they have removed the zinz from current oils and without it, can cause premature death to camshafts and flat top lifters. A local engine rebuilder here told me to use Rotella 15W/40W designed for diesels, since it still contains these additives. I realize there is much controversary regarding oil and it has probably been hashed out many times here and I have tried to do a "Search" on this with no results.

Much of the ZDDP (zinc additives) have already been removed from Rotella T oil. From everything I've read, plus what I've been told by my son-in-law, who was the head design engineer for Lunnati cams, ZDDP is most important for the break-in period. Once the cam has been broken-in, tests have shown there was no increase in cam failure. Add a can of EOS additive (available from GM parts dept.) to your oil for break-in and you'll be alright.
Besides my stock '37, I also have a hot rod ( :o ) with a high reving engine. Both cars have always been run with Penzoil 10W-30, both old & new formulations, with zero problems. I drag race the hot rod and put 2500-3500 miles a year on my '37.

The ZDP has not been removed, just reduced. When your 1954 was new there was no ZDP in oils, It was added in the later 1950's and new cars were factory filled with a ZDP rich oil for break -in starting in about 1958 (from the service bulletins that I have). When we installed new engines back then we added a can of GM ENGINE OIL SUPPLEMENT for break-in. Its is no longer available through GM. I have read that GM has tested modern SM oils in flat tappet 3800 engines with no cam wear problems. For break-in or high performance cam engines I would add some but too much is also N.G. Your low lift cams and weaker valve springs make it unecessary on the older engines that have miles on them.

Hoppy I have used diesel grade oils in several engines in the past but only from first start. The diesel oils will clear any carbon deposits that are helping the rings seal and will use oil in a short time. If used from rebuild there will be very sludge build up any where in the engine even after 60,000 miles but if you dont already you need to change oil filter and oil at 5000 mile interval. Tony
