Cleon,
Have not found the number yet but the number suggests a 261 or 292 head. What is the casting date? Will continue to look.

This head in question is not mine. I am trying to find the info for someone else. Where would he look for the casting date. I looked at 2- 235 heads that I have and the only other numbers I see are located between cylinder 2 and 3 on the spark plug side.
And they don't look like dates to me. Right below the casting number 3837161 is GM6 in large font.
Thanks, Cleon

Chevrolet used some 3837xxx numbers in 1955. The part numbers were rapidly being replace with later numbers after that. I have looked at 1954 and 1957 books (including history in 1957) and find no such casting number....could it be a Canadian head?

Thank You Gene, I belive you are probably right. He had identified his block earlier as being a 1955.
I will ask him about the Canadian possiblty.
