I am in the process of replacing the windshield rubber on my 1930 sedan. I removed the windshield with no problem. I pulled up the old bottom rubber then I removed the metal strip over the cowl that has the dove tail groove. To my surprise I discovered that this piece is made of aluminum.  Is this piece original, or has someone replaced it?  If it is original, when did Chevrolet start using aluminum? chevy

The moulding is original and the use of aluminum for Chevrolet in 1930 was nothing new. laugh laugh laugh

When I removed the molding I noticed there was a dry clay like material under it.  At first I thought it was a collection of road dirt, but after looking at it I think it must have been a water proofing material. What would be a good replacement for it now? wink wink

Either black silicone or black rope type "dumb dumb" as I call it. Both are 3M products. laugh laugh laugh

I have used GE silicone caulking compound in a caulking gun, buy the high dollar kind that is 25 year , it seems to be the same as RTV that is sold in a tube. you can get it in clear, black, white and dark bronze.

No. 3M has a special rope type of compound that body shops use for sealing seams on car bodies and mouldings. laugh laugh laugh
