I am about to ready to install a new exhaust system on my 28 Imperial Landau. The manifold has two grooves that I believe are for packing. If they are indeed for packing what do you use for packing? The car has one clamp at the manifold that looks to be original. Is that correct and should it be placed between the packing? I am also interested in any suggestions that will make the job easier. Thanks, Rich James

A clamp was NOT used to connect the header pipe to the exhaust manifold. Originally there were two asbestos ropes that were placed in the groves. They are not really necessary.

The joint of the header pipe to the manifold must remain flexible, otherwise things would come loose quickly or break if they can't move. Altho the engine and muffler are attached to the frame, there is still movement from twisting and bending between them.

I went to the local autoparts store and purchased muffler repair tape and Permatex pipe sealant. I cut the tape into strips the length and width of the groves in the manifold. I fit the strips and put plenty of sealant on the manifold and inside the pipe. You have to start the engine to put heat into the manifold to set the chemicals. It works great and looks so much better than a clamp. I did need someone to help. One to hold the strips in place and one to move the pipe into position. It is an interference fit with the tape in the grooves.

I too used muffler putty in mine and it has lasted for years, but as Ray says not really necessary if the pipe is a snug fit over the manifold. Obviously there is not much back pressure or we would all have troubles. Geoff.

Good stuff for my Capital re-build. Sometimes, a "vacancy" like a groove makes you mental trying to figure what you did wrong. Thank you.
