re: my 31 coupe's floor - the rubber floor mat will cover the area in front of the seat. Is there supposed to be any covering beside the seat or behind the seat? Was there any padding under the floor mat? I know that an ID plate is to be tacked to the floor on the passenger side. Can someone advise as to its proper location in that area? My sills are new, and I don't have the old ones for reference. From a previous post I learned that originally there was no covering of the trunk floor. Was there an accessory rubber mat sold for that area? Thanks.

There were small rubber mats on the floor and each side of the front seat. The floor mat used a jute backing. No accessory trunk mat was available from Chevrolet for that year. :)

This is interesting..... Should my '29 and '30 cars have jute backing under the front floor mats? I have the rubber mats with the bowties, but no backing. I thought they just rested right on the floor boards.

Does the jute stop a couple of inches from the edge all the way around or does it exactly match the mat?
Is it glued to the underside of the rubber mat or loose laid?
How thick?
THANKS!
Chip

Thanks Dog and Jiaccino. Dog, you wrote, "There were small rubber mats on the floor and each side of the front seat." Where these small mats plain rubber, or did they have little bow ties, or? On the sides of the seat, did they cover the entire visible area? Were they glued down?
Re: the serial number plate - the 31 chevy website says, "Located a few inches forward of the front seat under the floor mat." Can anyone add a little more info to that like how many inches? I'm try to be as accurate as possible with my restoration. Thanks.

The serial number plate on the '31 Roadster and Phaeton was nailed to the front seat riser on the passenger side. The Fisher bodied cars had the serial number plate on the main sill.

On my 30 coupe they are plain rubber cut to cover all the visible area from about the front mat (1-1/2 inch from the front edge of the seat)to the back corner trim board. And extend from the raised ridge on the sill of the rocker molding to the metal seat well. Mine are not glued down. Mine are also as hard and brittle as a potato chip and may have shrunk a slight bit. :)

Thanks Dog, Chipper and Speedy. I appreciate the help. I'll start my search for some plain rubber. Was jute backing under the side mats as well?

You only have two choices on the jute backing.....thick and not very thick. I suggest that you go with the "not very thick"! :)
