Total newbie here.

My father in law is restoring a '39 Chevy half-ton pickup and I'm posting on his behalf. He's got a working ignition, but with no keys. Anybody know of a vendor with old Chevy blanks, new cores, a replacement ignition, or another solution?

Thanks to VCCA forum folks for your help.

A lot of these old Chevys had lock cylinders worn so much that anything that would fit in the slot would turn them. I used to use a churchkey (bottle opener) to turn the ignition on in my old 55.1 panel truck. If that doesn't work you might try a locksmith. If it's like my 38 car, once you get it to the on position, stick a straightened out paperclip into the small hole in the face of the lock cylinder. If you are in the right place you'll feel a spring resistance. Push the paperclip in and turn an eighth of a turn or so more clockwise. The lock cylinder should then pull straight out.

Originally the door and ignition keys were the same. Do you have a door key? The key number which can be used to cut a new key is stamped on the door handle shaft. Necessary to remove outside handle to see it. The other question is the switch an original GM unit? If it had a replacement after market switch and eletrolock (cable running to top of coil) it may be a problem.

first up i have been in spooner wi. and you may have a hard time finding a locksmith . our locksmith has a master set of keys most of the time he can find the key that fits or he can pick the lock or he hands me the keys and tells me to knock myself out as it was stated the locks wear and the new key has to be in a certain way or position to open i went through this a while back on a spare tire cover lock he went through the set of keys and could not find the key to open it i lubed the lock a little more and finally found the right key . when i said most of the time he can open the lock i meant every thing but 34 it is two sided and a little mor difficult . on some models the key will fit other locks in the vehicle my 54 has only one key it fits all the locks. if you cant get it done in spooner i would bet a little west of you at the twin cities they have some one that can. hope this helps
