I never get the engine ID/other ID stuff down (like how you figure out where and when the car was built). On my '49 parts Fleetline, the engine has the following ID number--as best I can tell because 3's and 8's look alike to me. It says GM 48, the 48 being circled, and 8885258 and then 22 beneath that. Or maybe it's 8835258. What does that tell me? Thanks.

The 1948 and 1849 216 engines had the same casting number, 3835253. Both had the circle with the 48 in the center on the right side of the block. In 1948 the stamped engine number would begin with an F and the 1949 a G.
There should be a dae casting code on the block, like an 2 6 49 or?. If you would post the engine number it would be possible to determine about what month the engine was cast.
