Read the article about the neat '33 Chevy Coupe in this month's G&D. I have a question--what's with the wheels? I've never seen chromed wire spoke wheels on the '30's cars--was this an option? They look a bit like the old KMart wheelcovers you used to be able to buy. They are certainly different on this Chevy--I'm not sure if I like it though? Anyone know the answer? Another thought--in the technical advice column, the editors assure us that if we write in, they'll edit it. Bravo! I'm not rehashing an earlier post, but a little editing could improve the value of many articles, particularly for us younger guys. In the '33 articles, for instance, the editor could have explained the wheels. ChevyGene forgets more in an hour than I could know in two lifetimes, so a little editing would be great. Neat story about the old lady's stipulations for selling the '33. I recall when I worked as a bagger at Piggly Wiggly right out of high school and one of the customers had a '55 Mainline (you know the make). I asked her if she'd ever sell it and she said probably so. But she wasn't going to sell it to anyone she knew, instead she assured me one day a stranger would show up, offer her little or nothing and she'd sell it! I guess she did.

Hi TaylorD, What you see on the wheels of my car are a set of "snap spokes" and "hub protectors." I have attempted to gather every piece of paper and every accessory for the car. Later I will write about all the paper available for the 1933. It is amazing, and I'm sure I don't have all of it. Still looking for more of the official accessories for the car. Hope you liked the article otherwise.

Great. Not that I have any vast experience but I have never seen this accessory. Sadly, here in Central Texas it's very unusual to see an original '30's Chevy and impossible to see a pre-1930's but many of my relatives had Chevies in the '30's and '40's and I've never seen this accessory in their pictures. Most were farmers, so it's easy to understand accessories would have been at a minimum. My father-in-law's first car was a '34 coupe that he bought with his brother. Into the '70's, relatives still cussed my grandfather for buying a new '35 four-door in the peak of the Depression and then visiting all the relatives to show it off. At a recent car show at the nearby Geezer City in Georgetown, a fellow showed up with a '35 Coupe that was original/older resto--really neat car. I also noticed that the block on the '35 looks larger than on my '38, but I don't know if that's the case. Thanks for the story--tell us more!

Taylor, The G&D Editor will only edit errors such as in spelling, etc. The Technical Article Committee will check for "technical" errors. The committee consists of Chipper, AntiqueMechanic and me.
From what I remember of these 1930's cars back in the '40's you never saw all these fancy accessories. At least not in this part of the country where a heater was common, a few had radios and thats about all.

Some years back there was a person reproducing the hub protectors and advertising them in the G&D.

Yes, I just deleted his name from my online list of parts suppliers about 6 months ago! Ha! I don't believe that he has had any of these for probably the past 5 to 10 years! Too bad, since they were a hot seller.

The lesson to be learned here is "When you purchase a new project, sit down and draw up a want list". Then start the search immediately. I have on occasion decided that a particular part I will need will be available when I get to that stage. HA! HA! I have a key restoration sitting on the back row now. I have had it for perhaps 6 years, however every part I thought I would need was purchased as soon as possible. The restoration has not yet been started, but every major/minor part I will need is sitting near the project. S**t happens, suppliers discontinue items because there were slow sellers, prices go up to reproduce items and just a loss of interest or in the worst case, the supplier dies, and the kids are facing 180 degrees from the problem.
