have engine trans and rear from 40 chevy need to verify serial number motor is 3270960 what kind of transmission is this? serial number 691082 from some research it looks like a muncie RPO 4 speed ,does this mean 4 speeds forward plus a reverse? does this make sense coming out of a passenger car? i remember when buying i was told it came out of a two door deluxe ,did he mean a tudor deluxe? don't have car serial numbers

1940 engine numbers ran from 2697268 through 3665902 so it is a 1940 engine. I do not have the casting number for a 1940 transmission case nor the serial number. The case will have the cover on the left side rather than on the top. The cars had a 3 speed transmission with column shift.. A tudor or 2 door is the same. Ford called their 2 doors tudors. The passenger car transmissions were all the samr in 1940 There was a Master 85 2 door as well as a Master Deluxe 2 door and a Special Deluxe 2 door. Only the trucks used a 4 speed and had a top cover with a shift lever on top also. 3 speed would mean 3 forward speeds + reverse.

1940 chevrolet 3 speed transmission case. On the top side of the transmission case, next to the removeable side cover, you should be able to read 591082. That makes it a 1940 chevy transmission case. About 2 inches away from this number on the top of the transmission case near the centerline of the transmission will be the casting date. It might read something like.... J 30 9 = October 30th, 1939. B 22 0 = february 22, 1940. Both of these date codes are for 1940 trannys. The 1940 case will have NO tapped holes in the area of the speedometer gear. That is because the 1940 case has the vacuum shift canister bracket attaching at the rear of the transmission and not on the side of the case.
