The steering wheel will not self-center after making a turn. Does this indicate that the sector needs a re-build? If so, does anyone know of a vendor whos supplies this service?

It usually indiactes that a front end conection is binding....tie rod ends, drag link ends, king pins, etc. I wouls suggest disconnecting the drag link from the pitman arm - thene the steering wheel should be turned lock to lock with not resistance. If "tight" in the center (straight position) the gear is adjusted too tight. If in all positions the box is probably full of rust and should be rebuilt. With this disconnected and the wheels off the floor the wheels should go from side to side with no resistance. Self-centering could also be an alignment problem, like incorrect caster.

Following up on Gene's thought on alignment What does the wear pattern on the tires look like, if they are wearing unevenly then a quick front end alingment by some one familiar with these older cars may handle the problem. Other wise, check tire pressures all around, do a good lube job, and then follow up with a check of all moving parts. Do not attempt to adjust the steering with the pitman arm connected to the drag link. Follow the manual on this one.

The tires, alignment and front end parts appear to be good. Thank you for your thoughts.
