I just purchased the #36CG gas tank from Tanks, Inc for my '36 Master 5 window coupe. It looks identical in shape except for an additional embossed area on the top, opposite end of existing filler (assumed to be for a right hand filler on another model). I spoke with them to ask about the "Alloy Steel" material specified. The tank is made of galvannealed sheet steel ...... this is galvanized sheet steel which has been heat treated after coating to produce an zinc-iron alloy and to eliminate the spangle. The tank is then painted with aluminum paint to cover the seam welds to prevent rusting.

Were the 1936 gas tanks painted black or were they left 'natural' or unpainted (aluminum paint in my case)?

Beginning in 1935 the gas tanks were stamped out of terne steel plate and were not painted. Sound as if your tank is ready for installation.

Actually the 34 truck 18 gal. tanks at least in the 1.5 ton were also made from the terne steel and were not painted.

34 & 35 trucks are the greatest. 36 high cabs are OK too.

Thanks for the info Chev Nut and 35 Pickup Man. I wish they had not painted the whole tank with aluminum paint and just touched up the seam weld with Cold galvanizing.

The reproduction tank does not have a drain, so I am going to try to remove the boss from the old tank and transfer it to the new tank (BOOM). Also, I am going to try to remove the old filler neck and use it on the new tank in place of the short filler neck section which is supposed to be extended with a portion of the old filler neck using a hose and clamps (would not look orginal if you looked up under the rear fender).

Say, what is Terne Steel?

A type of zinc/tin electro-coated steel. No paint.
