Hi guys,

This may sound like a dumb question but does anyone know of a supplier that makes a car bra for the 53 chev car?

I was thinking it may be a good idea to put one on the front of the car when driving long distance to protect the paint. I checked all the supplier catalogs and they don't them. I have an old catalog from NCA dated 1987, and it looks like they used to make them back then, Tony

Tony53,

Bras can do more damage than they prevent. I know of one 53 convertible that had paint damage caused by the bra driving to the Middle West Meet.

Hey Jim,

Can you tell me about more about the damage?? I recently purchased a car WITH a bra already on it. I've been wondering what the pos / negs were about the whole idea. Thnx for filling me in.

Actually, I'd be interested to hear anyone else's ideas also...

Bill.

While attending an AllCal Meet a few years ago I observed a member with a 1957 car who had built a framework that attached to the front bumper and brackets. The framework was covered with a fine mesh screen. As soon as he was settled down in his lodging he returned to his car and with a minimum of tools, removed the framework and folded it up. He took it to his room for safekeeping. Removing was a fast and simple process and I would assume that to reinstall it after the meet was also a simple process.

Several years ago it was the practice to build a similar screen to place on the front of your motor home, car, or tow vehicle for protect to your vehicle on the Alaskan Highway.

42Bill,

The damage was to the top front and sides of the front fenders. It was caused by the fabric flapping where he could not see it while he was driving. After 600 miles it was quite noticeable. Of course some people might think that a very good excuse to buy a big diesel pickup truck and a long enclosed trailer!

Thanks Chevy50jim and Oscar, was just curious why I haven't seen them advertised, probably as you said wasn't a great invention.
It makes sense with the sides flapping in the wind on the paintwork.

I am going to order the radiator bug screen advertised in the back of the VCCA magazine from the Illinois chapter though, seems like a good idea for bug protection for about 20 bucks in stead of picking all the dead bugs out of the radiator core. Tony53.

Tony53,

I highly recommend the radiator bug screen. It is easy to clean and easy to pull out for car shows.

I have used a Bra custom built by "Wardlow' for several years and several thousand miles and experienced no paint damage. It is only used on long trips. It does not have any FLAPPING edges. I would guess the design of the front of the vehicle and the Quality and design of the Bra would have something to do with any damage done to the paint. I would never put a Bra with FLAPPING edges on my car.
On a recent 500 mile trip with a group of other vehicles we ran into some road construction (loose gravel,It's usually too late to turn back when this occurs)several vehicles experienced extensive frontal paint damage. My only damage was a chipped headlamp lens.

Not trying to convince anyone to use a Bra on their vehicle, just sharing my experiences.
