The 37-39 Chevy rear main bearing is apparently different than the 1940-1947 rear main bearing, but the other 3 mains (front, front intermediate and rear intermediate) are apparently the same for all years 1937-1947.
Can a 1940 rear main bearing be used in a rebuild of a 1938 Chevy 216? I plan to use the 1940 3 front main bearings in the 1938 216 motor rebuild, but can the rear main also be used? (I happen to have just purchased a set of 1940 mains). Mike

Can not be used. Is more narrow and is much different in the oil return area. What size do you need?

I got my set of main bearing for my 1938 from Chevs of 40's. If you recall I had some posts since one of the bearings in the set was unfinished on the outside to allow the machinist to machine in the amount thrust required. The second set I received had a small greasy note indicating this, but we'd already returned the first set thinking they were defective.
Chevs of the 40's gets their mains from Egge who responded quickly to my questions about this unmachined bearing.
