Hello, A friend of mine has a 1918 490 touring that needs a clutch. Before I continue I'll say that I have a 22 490 touring that also needed a clutch in 2002. We went ahead and put a leather lining that I got through Mr. Jim Farris. The job went well and I
like my leather clutch. Back to my friend with the 1918, He to put a clutch in his car a few years ago. However his leather lining
was too thin and the clutch has never worked well and has now gone out. A fellow club member who has and old Overland with a cone clutch. He used kevlar and he says it works great,so my 1918 buddy
is interested in kevlar. Here are my questions; where can kevlar be found? I know model T bands are a option but it would be nice to just by enough for a cone clutch. My other question is , would it be easier to pull the engine, or the drive train to get to the clutch? Thanks in advance.. Dexter Doucet

Contact Lou Iaccino- A/K/A "Werever Kevlar Bands and Cone Clutches" He is in Hudson N.Y. His number is 518-828-5581. He did my cone clutch. Although I have not tested it yet, since the car is not back together, I have several acquaintances that have used his clutches successfully and speak highly of his work. I would pull the drive train instead of the engine. The manuals for these cars describe how to do all of this. If you don't have one, I can copy the info. for you.

Thank you John, that is valuable information to me. I will certainly tell my friend to call him. A couple years ago when
I did my car, we had pulled the drive train and even had to pull one of the motor support! Dexter

My friend, Oistein has driven his 490 for 45 years and has used the leather for the cone all the way. When I recently needed a new (thinner) leather he insisted on using the leather type when I mentioned the kevlar as well. I had heard that kevlar could be used and to satisfaction as it was used on a Minerva 1912 w/o problems. We will try the old solution in one of the next days, after oiling the leather and adjusting the connections.

Very many brands had leather cone clutches in those days and they worked, so it should not be necessary to use kevlar if the leather has correct thickness, is properly fastened and oiled, and connections adjusted.

Hope you get the clutch good working again what ever solution you choose.
