I am currently interested in purchasing an 80 monte carlo with the v6 turbo engine. The car is a highly optioned car with no rust and 79,000 miles. It has had 2 owners and the car was from St Louis. I was trying to come up with a price to offer the guy. Looking at the current old car price guide it shows a v6 and a v8. I have seen 78-79s vith the v6 but no turbo. Old car price quide doesn't say anything about turbo or not. The guy wanted 7000 for it and now he's at 6000. Is that a resonable price on the car. Cars paint is good not perfect but good. Also, was the v6 turbo a good engine, and what were some of the common problems they had.

These ain't for old guys any more.

The 3.8 Turbo Buick V6 engine was an option for the Monte Carlo, also available in some Camaros. It produced 170 HP at 4000 RPM. Not to be confused with the high performance Buick engine.
The rear part of the frames rusted off in cars exposed to salt. The front ball joints can fail on cars that did not recieve proper lubrication. The power steering gears may leak. The 1980 3.8 engine wasn't too bad but usually required a new timing chain by 90,000 miles. Some tended to burn oil . Other than the fact that the turbo would be an oddity I doubt if it would add much to the value of the car. Could also pose a parts problem as few were made. I would rather have a nice V8.

Cars from the StLouis area can be quite rusty also. The frames on cars from the mid to late 70's and early '80's can rust out in any northern and central areas.
