I saw a buddy's new (to him) 1957 Chevrolet Cameo pickup this morning. It is a very nice fully restored-to-original truck. The work looks very good and the attention to detail was excellent. As best as I could tell, the truck was as correct as any I have seen and could very well be a 900+ point truck if professionally judged at a VCCA meet.

However, here is the rub. Before I saw the truck, the new owner told me over the phone he was concerned because the paint code was listed as 733 on the ID tag but he couldn’t find that code as a 1957 color. A 733 code does appear as a truck paint code for the 1956 and 1958 model years but I too couldn’t find it listed as a code for 1957. He was told the truck was painted Indian Turquoise and Bombay Ivory, which are good colors for 1957; but neither color would be correct for the 733 code on the ID tag. It didn’t look like the ID tag was altered, but I guess it could have been.

Interestingly, the ID tag also indicates the truck is an RPO 447A. My question, is does anyone show a RPO 447A code for 1957? I thought it might indicate a two-tone color combination but I couldn’t find it listed anywhere either.

The VIN on the ID tag indicates this truck was built well into the production run for 1957. However, my buddy is now going to try and check the VIN on the ID Tag against the VIN on the frame if he can see it through the brake main cylinder access cut out.

Anyone that can shed some light on this sure would help answer some potentially scary questions.

Thanks!

A tad off the subject, but there is a really nice one listed on ebay presently.

Jim,
Info from the 1957 truck Engineering Manual.
Indian Turquoise and bombay Ivory was a two tone combination for 1957 trucks including the Cameo. I don't have paint number for it. The Cameo used about 1/2 of the standard truck two tones plus had one exclusive one, Bombay Ivory over Cardinal red. No paint option numbers are listed.

On another page it also states that "Further identification is provided by the exclusive series designation plate which contains the model number instead of the series numerals as carried by other models"

I would contact Bob Hensel, he has a lot of truck material. If you learn anything let me know.

The RPO447A must be an option that came along later in the year.

Jim,
Try the 1955-59 truck T.A. in the G&D. I had a question a few years back and he gave a rapid and complete reply. He does have an email address also which is a +
