Hi All,

I am looking for someone to adjust the brakes on our '29 LQ fire truck. I am in the Southern NH area. I am willing to trailer it almost anywhere in New England.

No one on the department can remember them working properly!

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Brian

You might have better luck and help with this request if you post it under the category titled;

"Fire Trucks
Both Red and Yellow ones"

a little bit down on this list of categories. :) ok

I would suggest getting the repair or owners manual and trying to adjust them yourself. I would also suggest checking the linings and drums. That will require removing the wheels and hubs with drums. A local mechanic should be able to do that. Make sure that the linings use the riveted woven type construction and are grease and oil free. While having the linkage disconnected check the operation of the pedal and equalizer shafts. These need to operate freely. In most cases they do not. So they must be taken off and freed. It will take some time, patience and penetrating oil to get them to move freely. Once that is done then lubricate the rods and pins, front arm pivots when reassembling. With the instructions in the manual adjust the brakes. They should work just fine if all in in order.

If you are going to take it to someone to fix the brakes, it would take someone familiar with '28 or '29 brakes as they are essentially the same. Only the last month of production for '28 trucks had front wheel brakes. They are the same as the passenger cars which makes your search easier. The rear truck brakes are a larger version of the passenger.

Hi Brian-The Northern N.E.Region of the VCCA probably has members who can help with info on adjusting the brakes on your LQ.While being a member is not a necessity it will help you to contact people who may have experience with the early brakes.Send me your email address and I will be glad to help in any way I can.
