Trying to get everything original on my 1930 Special Sedan. I understand correct generator model is 943J, which I have. What is correct starter model? I have to buy new data tags, so how should they be stamped? Models from above answers? How should I do Serial No's? I got a new tag a while back that is way too big. My starter and gen. have holes about 2" apart. Who sells the correct size tags? Any ideas for a number-stamp kit? Is the correct black for these, and all the other black engine "accessories" (horn, splash pans, carb., etc.) a shiny gloss, or maybe a low gloss? Thanks everyone.

The starter is a model 714 L. The Delco-Remy tags for 1930 on both the starter and the generator should be large, not small. The distributor should use the small tag.

wink :)

Skip, my 1930 starter has a large tag, but my generator has a small one and it definitely looks original. Any feel for why that might be? Maybe the Delco-Remy plant ran out of large ones on the generator line and built some with small tags? Kind of strange.

All the Best, Chip

Yep, that's common. Since the 943 J generator with both the large and small tags fits a lot of applications, your original 943 J generator could have developed a problem sometime in the past 78 years and it was replaced with a 943 J generator that has a small tag. Remember, these cars had various owners since new so changes were made by their various owners over the years.

wink :)
