One of my new neighbors stopped over today. He has a 1930 Sedan with a noisy drive shaft. He has replaced the universal joint, but that apparently didn't cure the noise. He says he can't figure out how to get the old one out. Suggestions?
I plan to invite him into the fold.
Dan.

Do you have a shop manual? It is explained in there. Try a search on this site it has been discussed before. With trans removed and ball joint removed along with it housing and collar the end of the torque tube is exposed. On top behind the slot there should be a dowell that holds the prop shaft front bushing in place; drill it out, is about 1/4 " long. The bushing can be driven out of the tube via the slot opening.
34 & 35 trucks are the greatest. 36 high cabs are OK too.

Dan--Are you talking about the driveshaft or the torque tube bushing? If it`s the bushing, this is only a sugestion, the old seal and bushing can be left in the tube and a new seal and bushing can be installed in front of the old one. Since the diameter of the driveshaft is the same this works good because relocating it will eliminate installing the new one on possibly a rough or worn spot of the drive shaft. You can then secure it by drilling and installing a new dowel. If you are talking about removing the driveshaft, then that requires removing it out the back of the differential housing along with the pinion gear.

Thank you Pickup Man. I searched back 4 years but did not see it. My '31 "Repair Manual" shows a diagram, but doesn't cover the drive shaft bushing. I have a parts manual the shows the exploded view.

Drill out the stop nail, and use a chisel bit and knock the bushing forward. Regards Arvid

As I've heard a time or two.....a picture is worth a thousand words. That one is just the one I needed. Thank you, Arvid

That great Dan. I'm 62 year and do not have English on the school, so it's more easy for me to take a pictures than try to type thousand words. :) http://www.chevroletnorge.comBest regards Arvid

Arvid has posted a great picture. The arrow is pointing at the slot where you remove the bushing and seal. To the left of the arrow is the stud that pins them in place. If you look carefully you will see that the pin has been 'staked' with a chisel to hold it in place; you will need to do the same to hold a new pin in place.
