I've posted a picture of a battery being offered as the correct one for 1930 in the "VCCA Member's Photo's" section. It does not look like the one shown in the Chevrolet Service News. Is it the correct battery? If not, where can I get the correct one? Thanks!
Chip.

If your 1930 would have had a Delco battery it would have looked like that.....except would not have had the yellow caps. I am not sure as to what year Chevrolet began using the CHEVROLET Delco battery.

The Delco/Chevrolet Battery (13 plate) had a different design (if it's the same as the 34-35 batteries) on the ends if I remember right the bottom half had a bunch of vertical ribs and the top of the side panel had a finger grip indentation. All the side panels were deeper inset with extra thick corners on the upper 2/3 of the case. Caps were black. There also was an oval shaped indentation with fine print on the bottom of the side panels. Their was also "Chevrolet" & the "number of plates" cast in the side panels above the Chev. emblem and "Delco" and "made in USA" below it. The Delco and Chevrolet were curved to fit the circle. The batter was used into 1936. An 15 plate was used for the 34 trucks and master car and an option in the 35-36 years.

34 & 35 trucks are the greatest. 36 high cabs are OK too.

The 1929-30 battery was not the same as the 1934-35 battery. There was no Chevrolet emblem used. It was a Delco battery, with "Delco" in a circle on the front of the battery. :)

Well it looks like their "reproduction" doesn't fit any year from 1929 throught 1938. 37 -38 batteries were same as the 15 plate 1935.

The 1937-39 car batteries fit those years only and were not a group 1 battery. If I remember correctly they were a group 2L or something. They were longer and lower.

Despite common belief Delco batteries were not factory installed in all 1930 Chevrolets. To quote the Sales Data book with "27-Construction 1-30" on the bottom right of the page (indicates page 27 of the Construction section and dated January 1930) "Six-volt, 90 ampere hour, three-cell, Delco-Remy, Willard, Exide or U.S.L. storage batteries in rubber cases are standard equipment."
The Sales Data book, "(page) 32-Construction 1-31" "Six-volt, 90 ampere hour, three-cell, Delco-Remy, Exide or U.S.L. storage batteries in rubber cases are standard equipment."
For further information the 1929 Construction section (dated 1-29) of the Sales Data book contains "Six-volt, 90 ampere hour, three-cell Willard, Exide or U.S.L. storage batteries in rubber cases are standard equipment." Delco-Remy batteries were not mentioned.
So Delco batteries were not the only batteries installed at the assembly plants during 1929-1931. Sure looks like the first installation of Delco batteries was during the 1930 model year.

Sure looks like the first installation of Delco batteries was during the 1930 model year. Actually, Delco-Remy batteries were used in the 1929 model year as well. Here are just a few excerpts from several 1929 Chevrolet Service Bulletins that talk about the new Delco-Remy battery: "In order to install the new Delco-Remy battery on Chevrolet cars built prior to the present AC (1929) Six Cylinder car, a special battery ground cable......" January 21, 1929 Chevrolet Service Bulletin No. E-1-5 "We take this opportunity to advise our dealers that we have received our initial shipment of Delco-Remy batteries........" January 23, 1929 Chevrolet Service Bulletin No. C-2 There are other 1929 Chevrolet Service Bulletins that talk about the new Delco battery being used in the AC models, not to mention the April, 1929 addition of the Chevrolet Service News that introduces the new Delco battery and the front page of that issue also shows what the Delco battery looks like. :)

I have a 1929 Kent-Moore Flat Rate Tool Manual and on page 21 it shows tool # N314 a Battery Lifting Hook for all 4 and 6 cyl.models. The battery it is lifting is a Delco Battery The Battery is blurry you can see the circle but not the lettering. The external case other wise looks much like the 34-35 Battery.

Publication in the Service News of the availability of a Delco battery and even the special cable does not support factory installation. The Service News is intended for the mechanics not to document factory installation.
If the publication states that the batteries are being factory installed or standard equipment then that is actual support Delco batteries as original equipment.

Since the Delco battery was carried in Zone Warehouses in early 1929, sold at Chevrolet dealers in 1929, featured in 1929 Chevrolet literature, shown in 1929 Chevrolet film strips, and etc., the odds are very supportive that Delco batteries were probably also one of the several different brands of batteries installed at the factory in the 1929 model year.....especially since Delco was a product of GM. To assume otherwise, based on the 1929 literature and other information available, would be supposition, especially if there is no Chevrolet literature stating the contrary. :)

I'm sure that each assembly plant had the option to release a battery from what ever vendor was available in that area if it met the Chevrolet specifications and the price was competitive. Part shipment for production in California would have been expensive if the Battery was made in Indiana or some where back east. Maybe Delco's production capacity was not large enough to supply 100% of the Chevrolet & the rest of GM's car/truck line production needs and was gradually introduced in 1929.
