I have a 1948 Chevy Fleetline Aerosedan. It has the stock 3speed transmission, but I removed the vacuum canister and I am using a shift kit rod? The car was working fine. Now it pops out of 1st when it's cold, and 3rd gear on occasion. Should I check the shift linkage, or should I be checking something else?

I would be looking for the original vacuum shift equipment.

I experienced that a time of two on my 41. Mech. guy did a little bit if adjusting and now it is fine...

I still have the Vac Shift installed but that was NOT the culprit, just the linkage/forks. And the adjustment was small. People told me it was/could be, the clutch, Trans, Gears, Vac canister, or to keep the tires and throw away the car...but just an adjustment did the trick for my car. So it might be a good place to start, maybe.

I'm not mechanic...but I like the theory, start small {& cheap} and move up from there.

Good luck

Most conversion arms have two holes for the rod. If you use the outer hole you will not have enough travel to engage the gears completely.
Using the inner hole makes it a little hard to shift.
I always drill a third hole between the two original holes for a happy medium.
