Hi ya'll,

Tell me how to dispose of gasoline that I have drained from my '51' tank.

I have approximately 12 gallons, have no idea as to what is the proper way to dispose of old gas.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm in Georgia, if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance,
Bob

I would call your local city hall, courthouse or D&R.

Look in your local phone book under "Re cyclers". In Calif we can change our oil and the garbage company provides containers for us to recycle the old oil. There may be a similar thing for your gas. Good luck

In Georgia, we can take our oil to the auto parts store, they will take the oil for recycling.

Don't want to make a mess with the gas, thanks for the reply.

How old is the gas? I had a similar situation a few years back and simply mixed it with good gas and ran it in my garden tractor.

Locally we dispose of old oil at the garbage transfer station, they do take only because the county and city shops have used oil burners for heat. Old antifreeze is also recycled by the same shops. Cleaning solvent and gasoline are not accepted. I also mix old gas in small amounts with new gasoline and burn it off either in the 52 or in the lawnmower and tiller. I have been told that some folks mix the gasoline and solvents with their used oil and leave it at the transfer station. Could be dangerous to the end user. I miss my 74 Dodge pickup with the 360 V8, it would burn anything!!!!!!! talk

In Calif, when the garbage company comes to pick up your recycled oil they have this chemical stick that they check to see if you have added anything other than oil. If it shows that you added other things then you are stuck with your own mess.

Yes, I know folks mix their gas, then get rid of it, but am trying to do the right thing here. The gas is contaminated with sugar, I believe, but don't want to screw up anything for anyone else.

I think that's a good policy, keeps everyone honest. Our environment is messed up enough, just want to do this correctly.

Thanks,
Bob

Gas is like an old bomb laying around, dangerous stuff a gallon is capable of a big bang.A though occurs to me but do not know how legal or damaging it might be, you could pour small quanities in a pan full of grease sweep and set it out in a protected area let the stuff evaporate and then dispose of the grease sweep. I mentioned this problem to a friend today, he told me there is now a recycler in the area that could handle solvents etc. Maybe there is one where you live. talk talk

Thanks for the idea on the grease sweep. I'll check it out here on Monday, see if it is known here.

Thanks Glyn,
Bob

I would like to add one thing here, do not store gasoling in any plastic jug that is not specfically coded for that use. I had jug of dirty solvent (milk jug) setting in an old roaster pan with grease sweep, ( I get sloppy). came home one very hot day to find that the pores on the plastic jug had oepend up and all the solvent had drained out into the roaster pan. I suspect that gasoline would do the same. talk talk talk

I would call the Fire Dept. I have done this befor in Calif. and the took the old gasoline from me to use for training. I am sure they can steer you in the right direction for disposal if they don't take it. Just a thought...Oscar

Thanks again, Glyn .... I certainly could have done that myself, actually thought of placing the gas in small container ....like milk cartons and burining it off, bit by bit. Thanks for the heads up.

Honestly, you cannot believe the phone calls I have made to get rid of this gas.

EPA in GA. has told me to put the gas outside, in a tub type container, to evaporate. I guess that could be OK, but I'm in a very rural area, in northern GA where deer, bear, etc feed and roam. Being an animal lover, I would not take the change and have them injured in any way.

Now Oscar, that is the one place I have not called. Will definitely do it, thanks!

With the price of gas, maybe I could contact a local arson and give it to him, saving him at the pump. LOL
