The VIN # of my '40 chevy appears to be 1 KA0424. It is very rusted but I've put it under some very strong scopes and I'm fairly confident it's correct.

I've been told the 1 represents the assembly plant; the KA represents a Chevy Master Deluxe with a 113" wheelbase; and 0424 is the serial number. Can anyone tell me the name of the assembly plant and location represented by the "1"?

Your missing some digets in the serial number. The first two after the KA are the month asembled (04=April) and the serial number will be at least four numbers. What is the body number on the firewall? It will begin with the F for flint followed by the body production seqence number.

Thanks; maybe you can be of more help. The end of the tag is rusted and thin so must be we are missing digits. I checked the firewall and found the following:
Style 40-1017 and
Body B - 1843

As you can tell, I'm novice and this is the first car I've tried to restore. In the past, I've cut them up as race cars (which should make your day!) but I've never tried to put one on the road. Hope you can help.

Style 40-1017 is a 1940 Special DeLuxe business coupe. The business coupe had no rear seat and the gas tank is under the floor behind the front seat with the filler neck behind the door (front of rear fender).//The Special DeLuxe will have chrome trim around the windshield and a thin band around the side windows. The hood vent louvers will be chrome and the is a stainless belt moulding from the hood to the trunk area. The Master DeLuxe dose not have any of these chrome/stainless features.

The body #B dosen't exist. If the car was assembled in Flint it would have an F. The 1843 is a fairly low body production sequence number. That would be because the Special DeLuxe coupe was a low production car.
Will await your comments :)

I just looked back at your first post. The KA is a Special DeLuxe. That was the top model. The Master DeLuxe was the mid line and the Master 85 the "cheapie". The Special DeLuxe had more trim and features than any Chevrolet model prior tp 1940.
