Good afternoon,

I have a very rusty gas tank on my 32. Not on the outside but inside. Does anyone have experience using the tank cleaner kits out there? If so, I would appreciate your input. Thanks,

Geezer

If your tank is that rusty you might want to look at getting it professionally cleaned and tinned.....or possibly buying a new tank. The last thing you need is for your old tank to totally contaminate your freshly restored carburetor when you get it back.

I tried everything to clean a rusty tank on my 31 Ford even using muratic acid. Taking the tank off this car is one big project. Nothing seemed to work and all the repair kits required removal of the tank anyway. Mattson Radiator in Stanton California does a clean out that includes sand blasting the tank and coating it with a lifetime warranty product. I think they advertise in most of the hot rod publications. They do excellent work.

Quickly here are the steps to handle a rusty tank.

A Remove the tank from the car
B. Have a radiator shop to dip the tank to remove any fuel fumes.
C. Cut a hole in the top of the tank. Must be big enough to include the interior baffle.
D. Sand blast the interior of the tank.
E. Close the flap cut in the top and solder it to prevent any leaks.
F. Purchase a can of red snot (fuel tank sealer) and slush it around to cover all the interior walls.
G. Let it cure about a week.
H. Reinstall and fill with fuel.

Plan B, purchase a new tank if one is available.

More detailed instructions are included in the Tech Talk section of this forum. Also check out the dissertation on snot in the same section.

My gas tank if full of rust too. To the point that the fuel filter bowl has rust sediment in the bottom. I see the kits advertised. Do they really work? I'm told that I need to send my tank out of state and have it professionally cleaned and seal for about $400 plus shipping, etc. If these kits work I'll do it my self - they advertise as non-toxic bio-friendly.
