I would like to put electric Ignition In my 57 which has a 283 engine. I have heard good and bad about doing that. Many of the guys In the Tri Five club I belong to have done that and I have not heard of any problems with the running of their cars. But, I have heard other stories of people having problems. I would like some feed back from you guys who have done this and what the results have been. Thanks

I put electronic ignition on my 1970 Impala and it lasted one week before it left my daughter and I stranded at a traffic light on a main road downtown at 5:00 PM on a Friday! I've always liked the point system because it is simple and almost fool proof. :)

agree with the dog. with electronic ignition, if it dies in the middle of nowhere, you not likely gonna fix it and be on your merry way. with points ignition system, a simple adjustment will usually have ya back on the road, and at worst, you may have to go to town for a set of points/condensor which are way more likely to be available locally.stick with what the general installed originaly.mike

If you do install it keep an extra in the trunk. I installed one in my Corvair. So far no trouble. I have the original points and condenser along for emergency. I have found no improvement with the set-up (didn't expect to)....a sparking spark plug is a sparking spark plug. :)

I have had good luck with a Pertronix II so far (a couple of years), but I still carry a spare distributor all set up with points for a quick swap on the roadside, if needed. A poorly running points distributor will still (usually) get you home. When an electronics unit fails, kiss it goodbye!!

They have eletronic ignition but its a "built-in" unit of very high quality. Most last longer than the car....but this was not true of the factory units from years back.

I have run the Pertonix system for almost 9 years now with no problems. Runs and starts better. Sometimes the later GM HEI has firewall clearance problems.
