I want to purchase a bell housing for my new motor and I need to know if it will fit. The number on it is 3887001 and it also has the number A316 and GM1 on it. Will this fit my 53 1/2 ton truck? My motor is a 1961 235 with a four speed granny gear. Thanks for the help...Oscar chevy

I can't find the 3887001 number in any of my books. The number would be from the 1970's or up.
The casting number on a 1948-53 truck would have casting number 3701433 or 3835201, part #3847679.
The 1954-62 truck would have casting #3837001 and part #3738253.
Your transmission will bolt up to either bell housing and either bell housing will bolt to a 216 ot 235 engine. If you continue to use your old 1953 bell housing your present motor mounts will bolt up to it. If you use the 1954 housing you will need to engineer a new mounting system.

Thanks Gene, I will check the numbers again tonight. The 3837001 sounds right because this bell housing came off a 61 325. The transmission that was with this bell housing was a Muncie I was told. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Thanks for the help and I will double check the numbers...Oscar
