Hi Im new here. I have an 80 Malibu for daily driver and a 56 Bel Air sports sedan to restore. The car is a V8 with powerglide. In the list of options loaded for my project car there is a power steering option charged but one of the previous owners put it off probably when he decided to update the generator with an alterator, because the support is modiffied. I looked out in junkyards for it with no results, I think because this option was very rare in my country, so anyone could tell me if I can put in the hardware of a newer chevy?? Thanks.

There may be other cars in chevy's field... But They are not in Chevy's class

There are several kits on the market to convert your 56 to power steering. Most kits use the GM 605 power steering box. If you are interested in converting it is usually better to purchase one of these kits than trying to piece meal a kit. With the 605 box your steering column must be altered or use a new column that is designed for the conversion. Borgeson offers one of these kits along with several other companys.
There is also a new kit on the market designed after the orignal slave cylinder application. This kit allows you to use your stock column without any modifications. It also uses the same pump set up as the 605 kit.

There are several things to choose from. You can install the original power steering, most of the parts are being reproduced new, and it is a completely bolt-in add-on. Or you could install the 500 gear, which is made to fit 55-57 frames. Your column must be shortened with the 500 gear. This is a new gear that replaces the outdated 605 gear.
