My car has a dead electric temperature sensor. A local parts guy tells me that all Chevs 39-87' take the same sending unit. Is this true for 6V cars versus 12v cars?

Thanks,
Mike

If your car is stock and it is not a street rod, the temperature gauge on your car should be a capillary tube type of unit, therefore, it does not have an electric sending unit since it is mechanical. And, the stock 1939-87 temperature sending units are not the same.

wink :)

My car is bone stock CDN 39' and has what looks like the original AC temp gauge but it takes an electric sending unit. Will a general one fits all chevy sensor work on a 6V car?

The first Chevrolet to have an eletric sending unit was 1956 (and 1929 for one year). Your car will have a fitting that threads into the left rear corner of the head. A thin tube runs from the fitting to the dash unit and those parts all together and are one sealed unit. If your car is Canadian I doubt if it would be any different....and I believe that AC products were not used in Canadian cars and the US cars did have AC gauges.

If your '39 does have a temperature gauge with an electric sending unit then it is a non-stock part.
