A previous owner removed the manual linkage for the starter on my car. In its place was a solenoid, but it is defective. I doubt that I could ever come up with the original linkage, so I want to find a replacement solenoid.

In the "Filling Station" catalog, page 288, is the only solenoid that I can find, but it is for 49 - 54 cars. The model is FS-169. Does anyone know if this will work on my starter? (I could not find one on the Chev's of the 40's site)

Thanks,

Rich

NO, that solenoid mounts on top of the starter and moves the mechanical starter lever to engage the drive.
You need a remote solenoid and they were not used on Chevrolet cars. Was used on other cars such as the one with the name that brgins with an F..., should be easy to find in 6 V.

Gene,

It is the connection to the slopeing copper lug on the top of the starter that concerns me. The defective solenoid that I have is set up to make that connection. So, I figured that I don't have the only one in the world and that there must still be a supply. If not, I could use the one that I have to make the electrical connection to the starter and then install a Ford type solenoid. By the way, I don't choke when I say FORD. I have been driving them for decades, trouble free. A Chevy dealer screwed me in 1984 and I haven't been back since. I am sure that they don't remember me, but I still remember them.

Thanks,

Rich

The starter switch sits on top of the starter. It contains the lug that makes contact. It fits 1929-1937 cars. I have a new one if needed.

Gene,

I have seen the starter switch, but the ones I have seen appear to be activated by the mechanical linkage. Mine was set up for a small wire from a remote starter switch.

I can send a photo if that will help to show what I have.

Yes, send a photo....but it sounds as if something special was installed when converted to a solenoid. The solenoid set-up came as a conversion kit and I never really saw what it consisted of.
