I'm a new member to the VCCA and hope that I don't become a nuisance to any of you. But I do have questions! I recently acquired a '36 Master Deluxe Business Coupe that had been sitting in a shed for the past three years. It's what I would consider 95% original with only 32,000 miles and an excellent body. I've had to address some minor mechanical issues including the replacement of the water pump with an NOS pump that I bought on ebay. My question is..I've tightened down the "packing" nut snuggly but its still leaking (a slow, but annoying drip), how tight should I go before I've gone too far? I've worked on several older vehicles in my past, but nothing quite of this age, and some of the "technology" is very new and strange to me. Any and all help is appreciated.

Welcome to Chevy Chat II. Come on in and make yourself at home.

There are people that will say "hand-tight". Sometimes it takes a bit more than that.

First, let's see where it is leaking. Wipe the area clean. Take a good look and see if it is the mounting gasket, or is it coming from the packing on the shaft. If gasket, remount, if shaft, tighten packing nut a bit more and observe the results.

It's definately leaking from the shaft area. It actually "pools" up in the cupped area under the shaft. I have gradually tightened, then watched for any dripping and tightened again. To the point now where it is only showing about 3/8" of thread left to be screwed in.

You can buy a new packing and install it without taking the water pump off the engine. Not a difficult job.

Can the packing be replaced on both sides of the grease spacer or just the outer packing? Also does the correct grease have any effect on the sealing capacity or is it strictly for lubrication of the bushing?

Welcome, Allow me to jump in, since I have been through this before. You only use packing on the outer edge and yes the lubricant does make a difference since it helps to seal. I use, and recommend Lubriplate. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the info. I'll try adding a packing to the front side of the spacer to see if this takes care of the problem. And regarding the grease...I am using Lubriplate. I stumbled across this site and checked previous topics even prior to my joining. You're a great group of knowledgable folks!! Thats why I came aboard.

m006840,
What is called a "service water pump packing" can be installed in addition to the production packing one time only. The original packings are left in place and the service packing is only a split packing that is installed by just sliding the nut forward and inserting the packing behind it..
