The '33 & '34 standard clutch disc have a spline diameter of
1" X 10 splines, whereas the clutch disc you need has a spline diameter of 1 1/8" X 10 splines. You should be able to use a clutch disc out of most Chevs with a disc diameter of 9" with the 1 1/8" 10 spline hub,as long as it clears the flywheel attaching bolts/nuts.
I'm using a clutch disc out of a '38 Chev in my '28 truck, and it works just fine.No more shudder moving off from traffic lights,as the plate has the damper springs in the inner hub.

Thanks for the quick reply. There is a spring center disk on e-bay, but I see it won't fit. Thanks again.

Good info to know. Have thought about doing the same thing, but didn't like the thought of pulling it back out if it didn't work. Are there any down sides to you application? I would think it would assist on the take-off also.

Hi AntiqueMechanic & art,
I was getting a lot of shudder in the clutch/pressure plate area in my '28 truck, and thinking it was due to oil on the clutch disc, pulled it all down. The disc was dry,the lining O.K.
(it had been re-lined 6 months previously, but the solid clutch disc the "4's" run,had a crack from the hub centre right to the outside of the disc.Plus the internal splines were worn down to about 0.030" thick, nearly ready to let go in big way.
I had a NOS plate to use,but after some searching around,I picked on using a clutch disc from a '38 Chev passenger car,as it was the same diameter,9",and the same splining,1 1/8" X 10.I had to spot face machine(recess)the flywheel face where the original flywheel mounting nuts went, and use 1/2 width locknuts,
(high tensile),to get the mounting nuts below the flywheel face where they sat originally. This give the disc hub springs plenty of clearance.
Since doing this,no more shudder, and a very smooth take off from traffic lights, whether running empty,or loaded up with a ton on the back. And it's been in and used/abused for about the last 15 to 20 years of use.
So,if you can modify the flywheel mounting bolts to give you the necessary clearance with the disc hub springs, you end up with a pretty smooth clutch.
Hope this helps.

The springs in the clutch disc hub are to reduce torsional vibration (that would lead to spline wear on the input shaft of the transmission)in the transmission and drive line components. Essentially the spring style disc is a harmonic balancer for the transmission and drive line components. Chevrolet added the springs in 32 with the 60HP motor feeling the power impluses were now such that spring dampeners were necessary. A smoother engagement of the clutch disc is merely an added benefit. The 1937 style disc became the standard "P-519" used to cover Cherolet applications sometimes as far back as 29. Of course the disc will also fit some of the 4 cyl. engines as well. But be aware that it is not a "cure-all" for extreme wear discs that have bad spline wear or hubs cracking or unusual friction facing wear. Accelerated disc wear, whether with rigid or dampened styles is usually caused by a mis-aligned "bell housing" or "transmission support". These matting parts were dowl pinned from the factory and a lot of times, in later years, things got swapped out and nobody bothered to dial indicate and re-align everything by recalibrating the dowel pin holes (usually with an oversize pin and hole).

Where can I get a new clutch disc. with springs. I have a 31 4 door. It would be nice to stop the shudder.
