I had my car reupholstered. I recently had the metal seat brace break. The seat had been repaired, however, there is a tear (about 2" x 4") in the left side panel of the seat area. I was told that the panel would have to be replaced, about $225.00.
Sewing in a new piece of material would still show the repair. Couldn't a "cartouche" or emblem be put there? I want it to look good. Is this a good idea? I would appreciate your input. Thanks,

If the area has no stretch, strain or pull on it you can place a strong tape on the reverse side to close the wound. Would be less noticable than sewing it in.

Dan,

I don't mean to sound discouraging to your idea or Gene's either. It's just that it always seems like any repair (other than doing it the "right" way) always shows up at the worst possible moment. Whether it's just a buddy sort of pointing it out or when you least want it to be noticed or any other time you hope nobody sees it.

With that in mind, I have no suggestion other than to bite the bullet and have (what I believe would be called) the "cap" replaced. I will admit the $225 price seems high. I'm guessing it's 10 years or so since I had to do one; but at that time I think it was something like $35-$40. A far cry from $225. Maybe there's another shop in your town or near-by that you could check with????

Gene and Bill: Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. I took the seat to an upholsterer, and he is going to replace the whole panel where the tear is located. I just bit the bullet. The cost will be $50.00. Thanks, again, for the advice.

Dan,

Couple of thoughts....

I'm completely convinced you're doing the "right" thing.

I understand $50 bucks is $50 bucks; but I don't think you'll be sorry. It'll look way better than if you'd done anythng less...

Also, about the same I paid 5-10 years ago. Pretty good deal!

Just my thoughts.

Bill.
