My '30 starter (714L) has a stretched Bendix spring. There is about 1/8" spacing between each coil. A new spring is on the way. What should the clearance between the outer end of the Bendix drive and the starter housing be? There are three washers (about 5/16") there now. Also how tight should the bolts that hold the Bendix be?
They were little more than finger tight when removed.

Thanks in advance for any info.

The spacing should be about a sixteenth of an inch, and you may need to use special thrust washers to get that clearance.

The Bendix spring bolts should be tight and each bolt should have a bolt lock as well.

The original spacing was closer to 1/2". That's probobly what stretched the spring. Any suggestions as to where I can can get the thrust washers?

Thanks,

One-half inch is way to much and that is one reason why your Bendix spring is stretched. That much gap also allows the armature to move back and forth as well. The special thrust washers come in different thicknesses and in different I.D.'s. You might be able to purchase some from your local starter shop.
