Hi, an "original" 39 Master 85 that recently sold on Barrett Jackson shows that the starter to amp wire was clipped to the firewall...

Is this correct? I don't have holes in my firewall for these clips?
Thanks

The starter is not wired through the ammeter.

I think he meant the starter switch wire to the ammeter. The battery is wired to the starter through the starter switch and the switch is then connected to the ammeter so that all electrical components are metered.

I didn't have those clips on my 38 either. There are a couple of things on that car that don't look original, spark plug wires and the engine color looks to "blue" (though that could be the photo).

The wire is supposed to run inside the cowl and only the Quarter 20 stove bolts show thru.
Connecting this wire to the battery will give you more voltage when starting but it won't be original.
