Hey guys, My 31 had a kind off cloth pillow laying on top of the rocker arms when I pulled the valve cover off. Is this a stock thing or a after market idea? I have not seen anything like this in any parts books. Your thoughts? Thanks, Tony

Its an after market item. There were several brands made through the years. Often called a valve silencing pad. Some models/makes of cars had them factory installed. I have used them with good results and no problems.

The silencing pad is a common aftermarket item from the period. The pad just laid on top of the rocker arms under the valve cover.

wink :)

There were holes for the rocker arm shaft/valve cover studs to poke through. This helped to keep it in place. There were metal eyelets around the holes. The good pads were made of a few layers of a heavy canvas and quilt sticthed together.

Ok, now I know what it is. Do I clean it, (and how do I clean it)? Do I put it back in? Every time I turn around I'm learning more from the experts! thanks, guys, Tony

About all you can do to clean the pad is to use a stiff brush and brush both sides. I suppose you could wash it in solvent and squeeze it out, let dry thoroughly, and re-saturate with engine oil.

You can also purchase a new one.
