On a 1966 Chevelle Malibu, is the Serial Number - VIN plate on the driver's side door post painted body color or left unpainted?

This has been discussed frequently on another chat site. The answers were either way, depending on the plant the body was made in. If there was just primer under the tag, the tag would be painted. If body color under the tag is unpainted.

Hi Gene,
I too have heard what you posted many times over for years now.

But I have never seen a factory painted door jamb vin tag on any 62-67 Chevy. The cowl tags were on the fire wall when body went thru paint and were all finished in what ever material(paint or primer). There would be no need to have the vin tag on at that point if cowl tag was already in place.I have not seen one factory photo of a painted vin tag from era mentioned above.I have seen/owned many original paint Chevs from 62-67 and none of them had painted vin tags.I can not speak for tri-five cars, though, you're the expert there<g>. I likewise have never had a Chevrolet from the 50s or 60s with a painted serial number plate (unless door jams were painted after assembly). They are not VIN number plates! All that I removed had primer underneath, yet were not painted. I can only surmise that the plate was spot welded before painting and had a protective coating on it when the body was painted. By the way trucks were similar with unpainted serial number plates with primer underneath.

How Sweet the roar of a Chevy four!
