I recently purchased a 1929 landau sedan. The gas has been in it for about 10 years. After emptying the tank it looks like a lot of rust and sediment in the bottom. Has anyone ever taken the end caps off to clean a tank. I think I can sand blast if the end caps are only soldered on, or does anyone have a good clean used tank???

i take such tanks to the local radiator shop and have them put the tank in their caustic solution then have them coat the insides with tank sealer. usually under 75 bucks. mike

Mike has the correct solution. If the inside is bad enough they cut a flap in the top of the tank and sand blast the interior. It is then soldered back and then coated. It is a necessary step in getting a car running trouble free.

I recently cut the top off my '31 tank and cleaned up the inside. I cut through the soldered seam which is in the middle and had trouble welding there. so I used some JB WELD sealer on the outside. Had to reweld the baffle (had broken loose).Replaced the pickup tube. It had split at the seam ,then welded the top back on. That part was difficult as I am not to good with the gasless mig welder and would have been better off brazing or soldering it.
Then I used por15 inside the tank as a sealer. That stuff works great and have heard a lot of good about it.The inside looks great.

Wish you luck with the POR-15. It is NOT allowed in my shop.

I use the stuff and in the right application it works very well. Inside of a gas tank is not one of those. POR 15 is not a UV stable coating (will not go into the chemistry here) but on frames, suspension parts, underhood items or others that are not exposed to UV it holds up well. Once cured (cures with water and heat) it is really tough.

It will begin to cure once the top of the can is opened. I have used one quart can for nearly four years. Keep it in the refrigerator and take out only a small amount at a time from a small hole in the lid that is immediately sealed with a sheet metal screw.

Big Jake, Opinions are like "you know what", everybody has one! As for my 31 and 33 Gas tanks that both sat with gas in them for over 35 years each, they each had about 3/4" of rusty sediment in the bottom. Not having deep pockets and wanting to do it myself, I proceeded to cut both ends out (with my plasma) using air pumped into outlet hole and out filler and sending unit hole. "NO EXPLOSIONS". I then was able to reach in and super clean the inside. Yes I did use POR-15 inside and out. I then mig weldend the ends back on, finish grinded them and used seam sealer and have been driving the 31 for over 5 years with no trouble. I have heard alot of bad commentary about POR-15 on this site and I am sure there may be something better, but I have used many quarts with my satisfaction. When I get a new quart I transfer it to a large plastic mayonaise jar. " Remove the mayonaise first" and in between use I seal the lid with saran wrap and keep in in the fridge. I only use it in areas that are not exposed to sunlight. Oh well, "that`s my opinion any way".
