It's winter so Im back to work on the car.
Todays problem involves the rear spring shackle mount.
The pins that protrude from the frame mounted shackle hanger are broken and worn. Are they pins or are they part of the shackle hanger/bumper mount that is rivited to the end of the frame?
How should I proceed?

Pictures and procedure are shown on page 118 of the 35 Chevrolet Shop Manual. I would suggest getting a copy original or reprint. The pins are pressed into the frame brackets; tool used is also shown in the shop manual. The pins do not have threads as the Master car does but are tubular steel smooth pressed in pins. Chevrolet calls them a self adjusting spring shackle.
34 & 35 trucks are the greatest. 36 high cabs are OK too.

Any thoughts on how to press them out without one?
Also any idea where I can get new pins and shackles?

I use an air hammer with tool that fits into the hole and has a flange to push on the pin. Sometimes it is necessary to use heat to get them to move. Put back in with the hammer too. Other times I have rigged a puller from pipe and all-thread.

Neither The Filling Station nor Obsolete Chevrolet Parts have them.

Have you tried Bruce Bugay? I see a lot of Standard car parts on e-bay.

To expand your search the 1935 Standard rear shackles also fit all 1930-33 cars and light trucks ans well as 1933-35 Standards. The part number for the kit was 602999.

The Chevrolet kit and I am sure the many after market kits sold would include everything necessary for the job. Pins, plates, bushings, bolts, seals. etc. I might add that the mount on the frame would not be included and next to impossible to find .

i would like to make a safety comment . a while back i was changing the bushings in a 31 frame rail if i remember it was the front rear driver side any way i try the two pound hammer first that did not work thecame the air hammer that did not work then came the heat and air hammer well i started to heat i had a pair of shorts as most of us wear in the southern part of texas in the summer any way i was stnding beside the hanger all of a sudden this big hot plug of grease blows out on to my leg talk about running for the water i did . if i had my face down there i may have lost a eye as it is i have a good size scar from the burn . so any time you heat or use the air hammer or other tools it is a good idea to have the safty stuff on . hope this helps . i never did this again. it really hurt digging that hot gease out

Gary, I used dry ice to shrink the pins before i installed them into the frame end forging. I was afraid I would beat them to death before they reached the proper position. It worked great. Mike

If you are not in a hurry or think of it the night before place the bushes in the freezer well beforehand and save the dry ice. Another not recommended method is to tip bbq gas over it but dont use a match for sometime afterwards. Tony
