Hello everyone...I'm restoring my 1939 radio #985283 (I think it's actually a 1938 radio). It had the running board antenna that was in bad shape so I decided to replace it with a side mount antenna. I didn't think about the connecters (the tips that plug into the radio) being different. The running board antenna has a blunt end connecter that is plugged into the radio and is then turned to lock it in place. The side mount has the bayonet tip that is pushed into place. My question is, do I snip off the blunt end running board antenna connecter and splice it to the side mount after snipping off the bayonet tip?...or is there another way? How would I splice the running board tip if that's the way to go?
Best wishes,
Chuck

The proper solution is to replace the female socket in the radio to accept the modern type male plug. Most any other solution will break the shielding of the antenna wire.

The Model 985283 is in fact a 1938 radio.

Thanks Ray...that makes sense...The radio is still mounted under the dash so I'd better remove it and look at the antenna socket up close...any thoughts on how to replace the old style socket with the new, and where I could find the new socket receptacle (female),
Thanks again and best wishes,
Chuck

I remove the old socket by heating. Clean out the hole and increase size slightly. The modern socket fits right back in the same hole.

I have replaced may of them over the years. If you need a new one, I have them.

Hi Ray...Thank you very much for the antenna socket. I am now wondering where I attach the bare wire end of the new socket. My old socket joins with the end of a capacitor? (200VDC). Should the new socket connect to that joint leaving the (200VDC) in place, or should the new socket by pass that capacitor (200VDC) eliminating it?
Best wishes,
Chuck

After the female socket is installed, make a connection to the end of the condenser, and leave the choke that was attached to the socket in the circuit.

Thanks Antique Mechanic.
This post has provided the solutions I have been wondering about in the restoration of my 38 Radio, especially the antenna male to female conversion to suit the modern day male fitting.
I am going to have the valve radio unit replaced with an am/fm radio from a place in Melbourne, Australia, found via a radio restoration site in the USA. I will get thenm to adapt the antenna conversion.
I have the overhead speaker unit which will be fitted with a new speaker. Above the rearview mirror, I can feel through the hood lining, a plate where presumably it attaches. Are there predrilled holes to accomodate the speaker mounting? If not, how does it attach? Is it a case of drilling new holes and tapping a thread in them of just self tapping screws?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
paul

Just so I don't get into trouble, my remarks apply to the domestic cars and others are not covered.

Overhead speaker. The framework should still be behind the lining. It will be very obvious where the attaching screws go. The connecting wire to the radio box runs from the speaker down the left windshield post.

When I am ask about these modern AM/FM conversions, I recommend the owner contact at least two people that have made the change. If you get satisfactory recommendations, then go for it. All I ever hear about are the problems.

Always demand they return to you any parts that are removed from your box or speaker.

Thaks for that.
I will make some enquires about other people who have made the conversion to am/fm.
You are not suggesting that the wiring is already there?

In my case it will be the right hand post. I was going to loosen the internal bezell/trim for the windscreen and run the lead behind it, then retighten it. OK? Are the hole for self tappers or threaded screws? if thread , what size?

Are there predrilled holes in the firewall to mount the standard 38 Radio box, which mine is, above the steering column. There ar several grummets there and should they take the radio fixing bolts? Sorry for all the questions. I would rather know than experiment and stuff it up.

I found an original 38 Chev dash radio bezel, Purchased it and had it delivered to Sydney. Opened the package and found it cracked on one side, then made the fatal mistake of seeing what flex it had in it and YES I now have two pieces. Not happy with myself.
I took it to guy who does amazing fine welding( .25 mm suff), but he says it is too brittle to weld so as a toolmaker he says he will make another one out an aluminium block using the original as the pattern. Its worth a try.

I have also found a 38 Delco, the push button model and I was thinking of buying that and just having the toolmaker trim the top section off to match the original two piece item I now haved then use that. We will get a solution somehow. Just takes time and patience.
Thanks for the help.
Regards
Paul
