I have bought NOS Push Rods for my 38 chevy pickup 216 motor from two different people. One sent the rods that are like the ones in my 38 truck, in an old NOS box with part #838409 on it. They are 12-13/16" by steel rule. Is this the correct # and length for the rods?

The other person sent rods with no part #,in a NOS box but they are too short, 12-11/16" by steel rule. They have a larger end for adjusting and a smaller end that goes down into the lifter. They do not match up and the adjusting screw runs out of length.
What is the true part # and length of a push rod for a 37-38-39 216 motor?
One guy swears that the length should be 12-43/64" (12-11/16") by steel rule), but they are too short.

I have run the check and the 216 motor is the original motor from factory for the truck.

Im about to my wits end!!!

I meant 12-47/64" not 12-43/64"

AH! and the subject is pushrods for the 216 Chevrolet engine.

The trusted (?) Parts Book reads as follows: 1937-39 12-47/64 with part #838409.

1940-48 10-7/16 and part # 839409

The box the ones I was looking for read 838409. They are the longer ones like the ones in my truck. I need help figuring out what is going on. Rounding the measurement of 12-5/8" and 12-7/8" makes the ones in the truck a 1/4" longer. The base is a bigger diameter on the longer ones and the cup that adjusting bolt goes into is smaller.

I have solved the mystery by getting an e-mail from the guy I bought the right parts from. I just gave myself a big pat on the back. E-mail as follows:

Riff, It is actually an error in the parts book. The parts catalog does show the 838409 as 12 47/64, or in 16ths 12 11/16. That is an error. The 37,38 and 39 were longer. The TRUE 12 11/16 rods were the 33 Part#836980. That should solve the mystery. I am lucky enough to have inherited a 1953 back Catalog from a friend that was a Chevrolet Parts Manager during the late 30's 40's and 50's He retired in 1962 and passed away in 1977. He made many corrections in the parts book that I have. It has come in handy a couple times. Just goes to show not even the big man General Motors was right all the time.
