I sure hope some of you guys can help me solve the problem I am having with my '57.

Due to health problems I have not been able to crank up or drive my '57 for about 6 months+. My son and I finally got her out of her trailer last weekend to attend a car show. However we could not attend due to the car not running right. I will list what went on here and the facts known and hope for some insight from the experts here.

--all original 283 motor with 225 miles on it since complete rebuild.

--When first started she ran fine for about 15-20 minutes, no problems…she was blowing some black smoke out of her tailpipe.

--after 15-20 minutes she started to miss and run very rough wouldn’t idle without stalling…still blowing black smoke.

--gas in tank was old…we added some fresh gas after she started running rough.

--fuel filter bowl was only half full so we put in a brand new filter…no improvement in the running. Bowl full now with the new filter, she filled the new filter and bowl very quickly.

--removed air cleaner and shot a can of carburetor cleaner into carburetor while keeping the motor running.

--she ran steady if you gave her some pedal (fast idle) as long as you held it there but if you tried to raise the RPMs she would sputter and miss again.

--when you increased the RPMs quickly she would reeve up but when you tried to hold a higher level of RPMs (driving level) she would miss and shake like she was running on 7.

--checked the plugs and wires, all connected.

--no gas leaks.

--when we first removed the fuel filter bowl you could hear a sucking noise.

--ran the motor for over an hour without any improvement.

Finally had to put her back into the trailer. :-(

Your thoughts please…Thanks…

A couple of thoughts
1; pull one plug wire at a time see if any change happens,no change pull plugs and ck for spark. 2; ck the dist. cap, rotor, points, condenser, give the rotor a twist see if it returns back to were it started from look at the springs on the advance system,
3; carburetor possibility varnish/dirt
Its running rich, and this is only a start.

I am going to place my bet on the carb. The key was the black smoke would be a symptom of sunken float, inlet valve not closing the flow of fuel.

WITH THE ENGINE OFF, remove the air filter, take a look at the choke plate. If you are looking at the edge of it that is fine, however if you are looking at the face of the plate, you may have a stuck choke. As a test, place a screwdriver down inside the carb and force the choke to be OFF. If the exhaust clears up that may be your problem.

My thought would be to rebuild that carb.If the car had been sitting a while, that is where I would start, but, also it wouldn't hurt to change out the points and condenser as well.Any other ideas??? Good Luck!!!!

Check for fouled plugs. Also, keep in mind that old cars and sitting a long time to not mix, especially with today's gasoline. Fouling plugs on initial start up on a vehicle that has been sitting for long periods is a common problem.

wink :)
