Are we going to have any snow flakes floating around on our screen this year? Being from California where we don't have snow I thought it would be pretty cool to do this again. Does Bill have any tricks up his sleeve? ...Oscar yay yay bigl

I bult a Mountain Dulcimer several years ago from some plans I saw in a magazine, It looks nice but, I can't play a note. Some day maybe, if I can get some folks to pay for some lessons, all the "pay-for-lessons folks" I know are those that have paid for Bugleing lessons for Chipper. I don't think my dulcimer makes enough noise, for that to happen, however..

Here's a couple of the banjos I made. Note thay have a wooden sound board. They still sound just like a "real" banjo but unlike a "real" banjo these can be played quietly enough as to not wake the baby.

This one I made for my sister. She loves cats, especially Snow Tigers, so I had my son draw a pic of some on the sound board.

This is the one I made for my sister in the case I made for it. Except for the padding, foam, and chains on the lid it was made entirely of wood, including the hinges and locks.

On the case lid my son drew pics of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This idea came from my fathers father who had made a banjolin about 90 years ago and drew Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on its sound board. My older brother lost that banjolin. mad

Fantastic work. I love banjo music. How old is your son?

I was born in 1935 so I'm 62, well actually 72 but I didn't start chasing girls till I was 10 so I don't count those first 10 yrs, that wasn't living. The sticker is , I've been happily married for 36 yrs and 36 out of 45 isn't too bad. crazy :vcca: laugh

How many hours does it take you to make a banjo like that? Just curious. I don't think I'd have the patience.

IIRC it takes me about 3 days to make the banjo. There's glue up time in there and it's not like I work the full 3 days.

The banjo case took about 3 weeks. The sides were maple, about 3/16" thick, 6" wide, and 6-7' long. Bending them was not fun. Once I got them in the mold I let them set for a couple of weeks to make sure they had dried. Making the molds took a few days in itself. The hinges, lock, and molding were made from a cherry tree.

The banjo was made from black walnut and spruce.

All the lumber involved in my sisters banjo and case was standing timber when I first saw it. I took it down and had a friend mill it. Taking something from standing timber to finished product may be time consuming but it sure is satisfying. yay

Just curios again, how many did you make so far? And I agree, just making it from scratch has to be satisfying. Especially when they turn out like that.
