Is it possible to identify a differential from its casting number?

The casting number is 3833443. This number was found on the front of the unit at about the 10 o'clock position.

This is currently in a 1966 Chevy II Station Wagon. I am wondering if it is the orginal rear end, or a donor from another GM vehicle.

The 1975 parts books shows it for
1964 Chevy II and Chevelle with 3.08 and posi.
1965 Chevy II with posi.
1965 full size with posi (10 bolt)

What a mixture....may also fit a few more.

Thanks, Gene. I did not think to check a parts book. Is the casting number the same as the part number?
