O.K. I have just sent my VCCA membership application in the mail. Now the question. Live in So. California weather. I have a 1928 chevrolet LP 1-ton fire engine with less than 4,000 original miles, never has needed to be rebuilt. Engine seems in very good condition, leaks oil in the in the usual spots. I did change the motor oil with a detergent 10-30wt oil. Is this okay or should I be using a non-detergent 20wt or 30wt oil? Or is this engine able to withstand a detergant oil due to low miles?

I think your choice of 10 W 30 oil with detergent is a sound decision. Sure would like to see a picture of your rig here.

Cool! I would really like to see a pic too! Dose it pump water or equipment truck? that would make a difference on engine hours. :)

Goodaye all,it's my understanding that detergent oils are mainly used in diesel engines (to help remove the varnish buildup on pistons etc)remember the saying--OILS aint OILS

Thanks for the oil recommend. I haven't figured out how to add a picture at this time, but if you go to: crownfirecoach.org go to photos and to 1910-1950 members rigs. Will be the second picture.
1928 Chevrolet Chemical engine/hose wagon. There is no pump, it has a 40 gallon chemical tank, hose reel and hose bed. Can also be seen in the opening scene of the 1964 movie "Muscle Beach Party" The great thing about this engine is that its a 4cylinder, 4 speed, Chevrolet and it fits in my standard size garage. Other larger fire engines tend to have a storage problem.
