I just noticed on my "41 sedan that there is, what appears to be a fan, under the front seat, passenger side. I have no idea what this is. It appears to be original equipment. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Man, I would be up the creek without a paddle if not for this chat room. So many questions, so much to learn...

Hi Gary,

You are looking at the optional under seat heater for the 1941. When this unit was used it required a special defroster unit that was mounted in the conventional heater location.

Hi Antique Mechanic,

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me any more about it? My car does have the defroster unit. Thanks.

Hi Gary,

The under seat heater is a popular accessory for the 1941's. As indicated, it requires a special defroster unit that you have. On the left of the dash edge and facing downward are 4 uniform holes. In your case, you would have a switch marked HEAT and another marked DEF in two of those holes. The other holes are for such items as FOG, BACK, and AUX.

What else do you want to know?

Be sure and watch for the series in the G & D on 1941 accessories.

Hello again. Mine has two switches. One labeled OFF and the other HEAT. I can certainly play around with them. I'm guessing that perhaps the one labeled OFF works the defroster and the other the Heater. I guess that the fan is simply to move the air around? I can see the vents for the defroster. Do you know where the heat is introduced into the passenger compartment? Thanks again.

There is an IN and an OUT for the hot water on both the heater and the defroster. One from the engine compartment and the other under the car. Yes, the fan is to circulate the air across the cores to heat the interior.

It does not sound like you have the correct switches. Watch "1941 Accessories" in the G&D for examples of the correct switches.
