I just bought a really nice 26 touring. it leaks engine oil to the extreme, compared to my 28. While adjusting the valves I noticed a round hole in the block just behind the generator mount. I checked my 28 and it has a pan head bolt in the same location. What does this bolt do? I found an early thread dealing with early 26's being Superior K's or V's, my plaque on the front seat reads "Superior K" "car number 3V64934. The engine has part number 348532. Just behind the Chevrolet bow tie there is a 2, below this there is D 5 8. I think the block may be a 28 although the head is a single exhaust port.

If my 28 didn't leak oil down the right side of the block under the pushrod covers and drip off I would remove the valve cover and pour some engine oil onto the felt oiler pad or squirt some oil through the holes in the top of the valve cover so that the overhead valves would be lubricated, since these engines have no oil supply to the valves, rockers, and pushrods except what is provided by you and your oil can. I figured that is what drip pans are made for. I use old cardboard boxes that I have flattened in the covered trailer to catch these drippings. One thing I have noticed is that the under side of the car has never had any rust, I think it is well oiled. I usually over oil most of my vehicles anyway. My dad told me oil, gas, and antifreeze are the least expensive items you can put into a car or truck. I do what my old Daddy told me to do......
the block casting number you posted should be for the 1928 year model Chevrolet and D-5-8 would indicate to me that it was cast April 5, 1928

The hole I am asking about goes from the outside of the block to the crankcase, I can push a wire through it. Is it used to hold something inside the engine or can I just plug it?

Your vehicle number indicates a Superior V. They used the remaining id plates indicating "Superior K" but the serial number 3V64934 indicates produced at plant 3 (St. Louis), Series V, and the 63934th vehicle produced of that series at that plant.
The engine block is a 1928 cast on April 5, 1928. Apparently the head is of earlier manufacturer.

On a '28 there is a breather pipe that plugs in that hole. Plug it. Earlier cars didn't have the breather, and didn't seem to miss it. Herb Kephart

General information; pulled the oil pan and found that the two holes in question held the brackets that secure the four oil tubes that feed the oil pan troughs. I also found that the oil pump pickup was a length of pipe. Thanks for the comments.
